Kansas State University’s USDA-funded Rural Grocery Initiative set out to document and elevate five innovative grocery models serving rural communities. The goal was to use visual storytelling to share scalable strategies that improve food access and support community vitality.
The Challenge
Rural grocery stores are essential to community health and local economies but often struggle to source local food due to limited supply, distribution barriers, and supply chain complexity. These challenges create missed opportunities for both grocers and producers. The project needed to bridge this gap by identifying scalable solutions and translating them into clear, actionable tools for multiple audiences.
THE PROCESS
Translating Data Into Accessible Resources
We developed a visual system that balanced academic depth with practical clarity, meeting the needs of the USDA audience while remaining accessible to rural store operators. Each deliverable was designed to connect institutional goals with on-the-ground realities.
The APPROACH
Visual Strategy for Rural Solutions
Acevox developed a comprehensive set of visual resources designed to inform, engage, and inspire action. The approach centered on translating extensive data into visually inviting, structured assets that could serve a range of audiences.
The deliverables included five long-form case study reports, each featuring custom workflow diagrams that mapped out processes in an easy-to-follow format. A local sourcing comparison chart used to summarize key lessons and strategies across all stores, a digital resource catalog offering over 60+ linked resources, and a final summary report for the USDA.
The OUTCOME
A Scalable, Visual Toolkit for Rural Innovation
Through strategic data visualization, Acevox helped transform a complex research initiative into a practical suite of tools that can be actively used by rural grocers, community leaders, and policymakers. Our work enabled K-State to communicate findings more clearly, highlight replicable grocery models, and distribute accessible resources that extend beyond the initiative’s regional reach.
By turning case studies into compelling narratives, visualizing store workflows, and organizing dozens of resources into an intuitive catalog, we created a foundation for ongoing learning and adaptation. The result is not just a collection of deliverables, but a toolkit built to inform decisions, shape policy, and inspire sustainable solutions in rural food access.
